In-School Programs:
Each year, the Arts in Education Institute of Western New York assembles a repertory of works of art representing the artistic disciplines of dance, music, theatre, visual arts and architecture. These works of art serve as "texts" for carefully-structured arts learning experiences designed and presented by classroom teachers in partnership with our teaching artists for pre-K through high school students.
What is a "Work of Art"?
A live work of art is a visual or architectural artistic creation, or a performance in music, dance or theater. A work of art could be a painting, a building, an exhibit, a musical concert, a play or a dance. In the context of creative education, the work of art is the focus for exploration in the classroom.
Theatre OR Visual Arts

WINDPOWER

Wind Instruments As Technology!
When we think of great technological inventions, often the first things that come to mind are cell phones, computers, and the like; not many people would immediately think of musical instruments. But upon reflection, one realizes that musical instruments in general-and wind instruments in particular-are also marvelous inventions. The more we explore their design, construction, and playing techniques, the more we realize how ingenious they are in producing beautiful sounds in a compact size-small enough not only to easily hold and play, but also (usually) to carry around. Our wonder only increases when we consider that, the "operating system" or "CPU" used to control a wind instrument is millions of times more powerful than the one in an electronic gizmo: in short, it's OUR brain - it's us! Join musician Curt Steinzor to explore the technology of Wind Instruments from the tin whistle to the Yamaha WX11 wind controller through beautiful classical pieces played on a variety of wind instruments.

Veterans Art Therapy Program
The Arts in Education Institute launched a Veterans Art Therapy program in partnership with The Buffalo Vets Center and The Roycroft Campus Corporation. The Veterans Art Therapy Program will include sessions in theater, music, and spoken word, combined with painting, video and drawing, taught by certified art therapists and Institute-trained professional Teaching Artists. This exciting program will allow veterans an opportunity to explore their emotions and experiences through active, team-based participation. Participants' work will be presented in a gallery exhibit and public performance event at the end of the six-week session. If you are a veteran and are interested in participating in the program, send us an email, or give us a call at 880-3292.
Northwest Buffalo Community Center
The Arts in Education Institute has partnered with Medaille College's Community 101 program and the Northwest Buffalo Community Center to record the oral histories of senior citizens on video. The students who conducted the interviews were highly engaged, while the seniors were thrilled to tell their stories. Teaching Artist Victoria Perez, Executive Director Jackie Albarella, and board member/Medaille College Professor Mary Ellen Mulvey are working on this project. It will culminate in a presentation at Medaille in December, where we will screen our video (a collection of selected stories) for the entire campus, as well as for our seniors, who will be present to see themselves and share the experience. We hope that this program will serve as the model for several others that we are currently developing.
